“When I was SBCD I decided to use the old axe-and-mattock iconography from the map as the basis for our staff hat. That appears in full color. When it was time for our MM gift, we decided on custom belt buckles made by Thom Kostura who was on my SBWF staff in ‘99. At the time he was making engraved buckles out of exotic hardwoods but he needed a single-color, flattened version of the icon so that’s what I did. This buckle, made of zebra wood, is the very first use of the solid axe-and-mattock logo that has gone on to be used on countless staff and MM gifts over the past decade or so. Only sixteen of these exist. Additionally, I know that at least three (and probably more) people have this tattooed on them, which is an incredible honor.“ - Johnathan Berard, 2012 Sandy Beach Camp Director (Photo credit to him as well)
